Enhancing Vehicle Vision: AI-SEE's Spotlight at the 35th IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium on Jeju Island
From 2 June to 5 June 2024, the 35th IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV 2024), sponsored by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS) took place on Jeju Island, Korea. This prominent conference brought together experts from industry, academia, and government to explore the latest advancements in autonomous driving, artificial intelligence, and connected cars, with a focus on enhancing road safety and convenience. Among the many presentations, AI-SEE’s contributions captured the attention of attendees with their innovative approach to enhancing vehicle vision in adverse weather.
On 2 June, AI-SEE partners Werner Ritter, Project Coordinator from Mercedes-Benz, Matti Kutila from VTT and Alwin Kienle from the University of Ulm, participated in the 12th Workshop on Cooperative and Automotive Driving, as part of the symposium. Werner Ritter provided an overview of the AI-SEE project, emphasizing its latest results. Alwin Kienle delved into the physics-based rendering of inclement weather, and Matti Kutila explored automated driving in harsh winter weather. The session, attended by approximately 35 experts, underscored the importance of developing innovative sensing options for autonomous vehicles enabling automated driving in all relevant weather & lighting conditions (snow, heavy rain, fog). The workshop also sparked lively discussions among the participants, focusing on topics such as the reliability of AI-based data processing and cooperative vehicles. Following the discussions, they concluded that a shift towards software-defined vehicles is underway.
Beyond the workshop, the AI-SEE partners actively participated in a prestigious industry panel, contributing their expertise to IEEE and ISO standards discussions.
The symposium provided a valuable platform for AI-SEE to present its cutting-edge research and foster exchange with other experts in the field.
